English for Lawyers

If you are working or studying in the field of law, then new programmes from BVN could help you to strengthen your language skills for working effectively.

Specifically, you can:

• Improve your ability to write common legal text documents such as letters and memoranda.
• Improve your ability to read and understand legal texts, correspondence and commercial law documents.
• Enhance your comprehension of spoken English when it is used in meetings, discussions and interviews with legal content.
• Strengthen your speaking skills so as to be more effective in discussions with colleagues, interviews with clients and contract negotiations.
• Expand the range of your professional vocabulary and fixed phrases.
• Refine your skills in expressing, supporting, evaluating and refuting arguments.
• Develop your skills in recognising and understanding nuances in English.

You can also prepare for and take the Cambridge ILEC Examination (International Legal English Certificate), a qualification recognised by Professional Bodies, Universities and Law Firms across the world.

BVN is an authorised Cambridge ILEC Test Centre and examinations are available every month.

Pre-requisites

• If you have IELTS 5.0 or above and have knowledge of law in practice then you can join the BVN ILEC Course, which comprises 15 modules over 45 hours of tuition and gives you the benefits for your work. The module structure is shown in Appendix A.
• If you wish, you can prepare for the ILEC Exam after successfully completing the BVN ILEC Course by joining the Exam Preparation Course of 30 hours tuition.
• If you have a limited knowledge of law practice and IELTS 4.5 or above, then you can join the BVN pre-ILEC course comprising 2 modules of English each with 45 hours of tuition.
• If you have a good knowledge of law in practice and IELTS of 4.5 or above you can join the BVN pre-sessional English for ILEC. According to your level, you would take 1 or 2 modules of 45 hours of tuition.

Course Leader

The course will be led by Joseph Ormerod, a graduate of Oxford University and holder of an MBA degree, who brings to this course his wealth of experience of commercial law, gained over 40 years from senior roles in commerce roles and from company directorships.
